Kirk Urges Americans To Lower Rhetoric
Clear Facts
- Erika Kirk, CEO of Turning Point USA, addressed calls to temper political rhetoric during a CBS News town hall.
- She responded to questions about President Trump’s comments on Democratic lawmakers and political violence, emphasizing personal and collective responsibility.
- Efforts to establish TPUSA chapters have met both increased interest and significant resistance in various school districts across the country.
During a televised town hall, Erika Kirk was asked about President Trump’s response to a controversial video by Democratic lawmakers urging military and intelligence personnel to disregard allegedly illegal orders. Kirk stated that all Americans play a role in calming divisive rhetoric and stressed the importance of personal responsibility.
Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin and five other former military or intelligence Democrats appeared in a video on November 18 encouraging service members to refuse “illegal” orders from Trump. The president accused them of sedition and said their actions could warrant the death penalty.
Hunter Kozak questioned Erika Kirk about whether she condemned Trump’s statements regarding sedition and the death penalty for Democrats.
“I want to tell you how much I appreciate your calls for peace and unity and I’m likewise horrified by the people in my so-called ‘camp’ who were cheering about Charlie’s murder,” Kozak told Erika Kirk.
He continued, “When powerful, influential people on either side of the aisle stoke the flames, the flames can become an inferno.”
Slotkin was unable to specify any illegal order Trump had issued during her interview with Martha Raddatz.
“I appreciate your question. You know my heart. Why would I ever say, ‘Yes, go murder people?'” Erika Kirk answered.
She added, “This is so much deeper than just one. I understand your sentiment, I do, but this is also so much deeper than just one person. This starts at the home. Okay? This starts with family. This starts with a seed that grows and grows. You can choose to have evil in your heart or you can choose to have light. What you consume and what you absorb from the outside world will manifest itself.”
“No, I will never agree with political violence,” Mrs. Kirk said. “My husband is a victim of it. I’m a victim of it, but what I’m trying to say here is that we can blame everyone else, we have to look in the mirror.”
Erika Kirk criticized parents who rely on electronic devices to raise their children instead of active involvement.
“My call to action from that is parents, step up,” Kirk said. “Do you want your kid to be a thought leader or an assassin? That’s where we’re at. Do you think our political leaders have a responsibility to turn the temperature down right now? Well, I think everyone has a responsibility to do that and I’m doing my part. I’m not in control of other people.”
TPUSA has reportedly received over 100,000 inquiries about starting chapters across the country since Kirk’s assassination. Some school districts have resisted these efforts, with criticism and comparisons aimed at the organization by local officials and activists.
In parts of Michigan and Virginia, the formation of TPUSA chapters has faced strong opposition, highlighting ongoing debates over conservative student organizations in schools.
