Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman explained that special circumstances, including a deadly weapon and multiple victims, could lead to life without parole or the death penalty if convicted.
“Charges are not evidence,” Hochman cautioned then, reminding the public that Reiner had to be allowed his day in court and that prosecutors would be held to the long-enduring “beyond a reasonable doubt” standard when they presented their case to 12 jurors.
Nick Reiner is currently being held without bail as requested by prosecutors.
According to Hochman, the family’s high profile has amplified the heartbreak surrounding the case, and he stressed the need for due process.
“Please do not rely on rank speculation, rumor, or hearsay to believe that you know anything about this case,” Hochman said, reminding the public to make sure that they get their information from “trusted sources” and wait for the evidence to be presented in court.
Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell called the situation “heartbreaking and deeply personal,” underlining the emotional toll on the city.
Officials stated that the autopsy is still pending, and the cause and time of death have not yet been determined.
