WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday night gave his Republican National Convention (RNC) address that harped on President Donald Trump’s ‘law and order’ efforts and commendation of the law enforcement personnel.
  • RNC speakers have tagged Democrats as promoters of violence and opposition towards law enforcement.
  • The Trump couple made a surprise appearance at the end of Pence’s address to congratulate him.

During his address at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence highlighted President Donald Trump’s crusade on law and order, and lauded law enforcement officers’ efforts against halting the mass protests that happened in the recent months due to the brutal killing of George Floyd.

“Let me be clear: the violence must stop – whether in Minneapolis, Portland, or Kenosha,” Pence said. “Too many heroes have died defending our freedoms to see Americans strike each other down. We will have law and order on the streets of this country for every American of every race and creed and color.”

“The hard truth is, you won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America,” the vice president continued.

“Law and order are on the ballot. The choice in this election is whether America remains America,” Pence said.

The RNC speakers on Wednesday referred to Democrats as provokers of riots and growing opposition against law enforcement officers.

“From Seattle and Portland to Washington and New York — Democrat-run cities across this country are being overrun by violent mobs. The violence is rampant. There’s looting, chaos, destruction, and murder,” said South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem.

“People that can afford to flee have fled. But the people that can’t, good, hard-working Americans, are left to fend for themselves.”

Crimes of violence in cities across the US continue to rise, regardless of the local leaders’ political affiliation.

RNC’s third-night speeches focused on the government’s handling of military and law enforcement that would address for instance the recent chaos caused by the protests in Wisconsin over the brutal shooting of another black man named Jacob Blake.

According to Trump’s campaign director Tim Murtaugh, the president “has repeatedly and consistently condemned all forms of violence.”

Trump was briefed about the video of Blake’s shooting incident by Kenosha police. Earlier on Wednesday, the president wrote on Twitter: “TODAY, I will be sending federal law enforcement and the National Guard to Kenosha, WI to restore LAW and ORDER!”

At the end of Pence’s speech, Trump and his wife Melania came out to congratulate him and greeted the crowd.

Kellyanne Conway, White House’s counselor, slammed Biden’s choice of Kamala Harris as her vice president. “A woman in a leadership role still can seem novel. Not so for President Trump,” she said.

Other RNC speakers addressed a group of women voters who have become skeptical of Trump’s capacity and appealed to Black voters to continue supporting the Trump-Pence administration.
