Progressive Groups Target Democrats Increasing Influence
Clear Facts

- Allam’s campaign received endorsements from prominent progressive leaders and groups, including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Justice Democrats.
- Leaders We Deserve and Justice Democrats are expanding efforts to support progressive candidates in primary races across the country ahead of the 2026 elections.
The Democratic Party faces growing pressure from its progressive wing as activists and groups mount primary challenges against incumbents. Nida Allam’s campaign marks another step in the movement to shift the party further left.
Sen. Bernie Sanders and multiple progressive organizations have backed Allam, reflecting national support for more left-leaning policies. The endorsements come amid broader efforts to advance younger candidates and challenge established Democrats.
“I’m not here to stay quiet while Washington fails us,” Allam said in her campaign launch video.
“I’m here to fight for the people who built this district. This seat doesn’t belong to lobbyists and billionaires. It belongs to us. To use every dollar, resource and tool to fight back against Trump’s authoritarianism and corporate greed, and to build a brighter future for every North Carolinian.”
David Hogg, former DNC vice chair and founder of Leaders We Deserve, expressed pride in supporting Allam’s campaign. Leaders We Deserve is advancing a mission to elect young, progressive candidates nationwide and has invested heavily in challenging incumbent Democrats.
The group has extended support to progressive candidates for key races, including city mayoral seats, congressional districts in California, Texas, Michigan, and Tennessee, as well as current and former incumbents. Justice Democrats likewise continues to endorse a wide slate of challengers in major districts, such as campaigns in California, Colorado, Missouri, New York, and Tennessee.
Prominent progressive figures like Saikat Chakrabarti and Scott Wiener have also launched campaigns in traditionally Democratic strongholds, fueling debates about the party’s direction. National organizations are intensifying efforts to influence the outcome of the 2026 midterms by backing candidates committed to progressive priorities.
Allam has criticized Foushee for what she described as a lack of response to funding cuts that affected the district. Foushee has not publicly responded to these claims.
