WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • On Monday, Snap Inc. revealed Spotlight ━ a Snapchat feature that has the same operation such as TikTok and Instagram’s Reels.
  • The company will inspire users to submit clips that can be featured in Spotlight feed by giving a daily payout based on the number of views it could get.
  • The soft launching of the new Snapchat feature would be available in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

Social tech company Snap on Monday announced that it would launch Spotlight, a feature in Snapchat social media app that has the same usability like TikTok and Instagram’s Reels.

In a feed where millions of users can swipe or tap through the video clips, Spotlight will present the top snaps which can be played in a continuous loop. Users will have the discretion to watch whatever snap they prefer.

The launching of Spotlight aimed at expanding the entertainment content available to users since the original Snapchat feature was limited to snaps posted by their friends and those published in Discover feed. A central location will be allotted to Spotlight to give users access to user-generated content with no limits.

The company will encourage users to submit clips and get featured in Spotlight by providing a daily payout of over $1 million. The payout will be spread across users who will successfully create entertaining snaps and will be determined by the number of views based on a proprietary equation.

The company’s spokesperson told CNBC that Snap will provide daily payouts by end of the year. The paying scheme would be similar to TikTok and Facebook’s Instagram Reels. To get a payout, users should be aged 16 and above.

In creating Spotlight, the company’s spokesman said that Snap got its inspiration from other short video services like TikTok and Instagram’s Reels. Lots of users actually used video filters from Snapchat’s camera and other distinct augmented-reality functions prior to exporting and publishing it on TikTok. Reels, meanwhile, influenced Snap to create Spotlight to showcase more entertainment content for its users.

The company’s spokesman also said that Snap wishes Spotlight to gain a distinct feel against its counterparts. Public comments would not be included in the new Snapchat feature. It would also prohibit any content with malicious and misleading characteristics.

For the soft launching, Spotlight would be available to the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and top countries in Europe.
