WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • President Donald Trump and 17 states backed a Texas lawsuit that aimed at challenging the election results on the four key battleground states ━ Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
  • All 17 states have voted for Trump and argued that the four states unlawfully violated the election law because of “unconstitutional administration.”
  • The suit was the latest effort by Trump and his allies to halt the December 14 deadline of certifying the election results.

On Wednesday, 17 US states submitted a brief to the Supreme Court, backing a Texas lawsuit that contests the election results on the four key swing states that President-elect Joe Biden won.

President Donald Trump has said that he would also participate in the case, citing his “rights as a candidate” and that those states failed to “follow and enforce state election laws” in the recent election.

Texas Attorney General Paxton argued that Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin committed unlawful acts after changing their election laws at the last minute. Paxton has asked the Supreme Court to nullify Biden’s victory in those four battleground states and halt the presidential electors’ appointments to investigate the alleged voter fraud.

Seventeen states ━ all won by Trump and have Republican attorney generals ━ supported the lone star state’s suit: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, and West Virginia.

The participating states backed the case since “the unconstitutional administration of elections” of the four indicted states have reduced their voting strength.

Last Tuesday, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel (D) described Texas’ lawsuit as “a publicity stunt.”

“The Michigan issues raised in this complaint have already been thoroughly litigated and roundly rejected in both state and federal courts – by judges appointed from both political parties,” she said.

For Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul (D), the suit was “an embarrassment,” adding that he felt “sorry for Texans that their tax dollars are being wasted on such a genuinely embarrassing lawsuit.”

According to Paxton, the four swing states have “exploited the COVID-19 pandemic to justify ignoring federal and state election laws and unlawfully enacting last-minute changes, thus skewing the results.”

In response to the suit, the president wished for a successful electoral protest bid.

“We will be INTERVENING in the Texas (plus many other states) case. This is the big one. Our Country needs a victory!” Trump tweeted on Wednesday morning.

The suit came on the same day where Supreme Court dismissed another challenge by Trump and his allies, citing a 2019 state law that said that mail-in ballots were unlawful.

The latest suit is part of the eleventh-hour efforts of Trump’s campaign and supporters to flip over the election result prior to December 14 where the Electoral College would convene to officially elect Biden.
