WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Tim Murtaugh, President Donald Trump’s campaign communications director, held a press conference call with reporters on Tuesday, saying that the president was eager to go back to the campaign trail and continue connecting with the Americans.
  • Murtaugh said that it is during the campaign where Trump “is most effective and is without question more effective than Joe Biden.”
  • The press conference call was largely concentrated on Biden’s speech and press conference in Delaware on Tuesday afternoon where Murtaugh posted a list of questions that they wanted to get a response from him.

President Donald Trump’s campaign communications director Tim Murtaugh hosted a press conference call with the media on Tuesday. He said that the president is “eager to return to the campaign trail and to keep campaigning and keep connecting with Americans,” and is aiming to hold more of his “signature” rallies.

Murtaugh even showcased Trump’s performance during the call by way of comparing it versus his Democratic-nominee rival, former Vice President Joe Biden.

“That is where he is, is most effective and is without question more effective than Joe Biden,” Murtaugh told reporters of how he described Trump’s performance at rallies.

“It’s no secret that Joe Biden, the Democrats and many in the national media would love to keep President Trump off the campaign trail, but he is determined to keep meeting Americans in person and speaking to them directly,” he added.

Concerns about Trump’s future campaign rallies arose after the “underwhelming” attendance he had during his Tulsa rally in Oklahoma last June 20 — which was his first rally since early March and the largest indoor event in the US since lockdowns were imposed due to the COVID-19 threat.

When asked if he had any details on where or when his camp might hold another event, Murtaugh refused to give any information.

“As far as time, and place and actual locations of rallies, that’s something that we are always looking at and always planning and always considering,” he said. “We have never had a practice of announcing a rally until it is confirmed and ready to go, so we have never commented on our deliberations.”

The phone call came just as CNN reported that Trump’s campaign called off its plan to hold a rally in Alabama next weekend due to the surge of new COVID-19 cases. When asked about that CNN report late afternoon on Tuesday, Murtaugh said, “We don’t comment about rally planning.”

The press conference call primarily focused on Biden’s speech and press conference held in Delaware on Tuesday afternoon where Murtaugh highlighted a list of questions that they wanted to hear an answer from their democratic rival.

According to recent polls, Trump was trailing behind Biden both nationwide and in some key states by double digits. In response, the president said that his internal survey shows he’s doing well and said that the polls showing him trailing behind Biden are a “joke.”
