Whistleblower Sparks Probe Into Medicaid Fraud Scheme

Federal lawmakers are heightening scrutiny after allegations were made that a Maine health services company defrauded the state’s Medicaid program for years.
The founder, Abdullahi Ali, has denied wrongdoing and stated his pride in his work, but concerns have intensified after a series of fraud incidents linked to Somali-American groups in other states.
Christopher Bernardini said in an interview, “I just couldn’t fathom it — I thought we were helping people; I thought this was all on the up-and-up.”
He reported to authorities that Gateway manipulated its electronic system to charge for home visits that did not take place, thus billing taxpayers for services never delivered.
“It just got worse and worse until I started really putting up a stink,” Bernardini added.
Rep. James Comer has signaled his committee’s intention to use subpoena power if states run by Democratic governors refuse to turn over key data necessary for the investigation.
“If anyone that has received correspondence from us thus far requesting information, if they don’t turn over that information, then they will get a subpoena. And we’re serious about this. We’re not going to back down,” Comer said.
The company came under state investigation in 2022 after state officials found over $770,000 in questionable Medicaid billing due to incomplete documentation.
Ali responded, “I make no apologies for building a successful business in Maine, working hard to earn a living, earning my PhD, giving back to my Maine community, and running for office in Jubaland. I am proud Somali-American.”
The House Oversight Committee’s probe aims to uncover whether fraud is more widespread in Medicaid and related social programs.
