A North Austin church associated with Democrat state Representative James Talarico is under scrutiny for hosting political organizing events and activist training sessions.

Pastor Jim Rigby told congregants the church hired plainclothes security as a precaution against negative communication about its political involvement.

The facility hosted a June gathering for the No Kings protest movement, providing attendees with guidance on digital safety and personal privacy.

This session came immediately after a traditional morning worship service in the church sanctuary.

“Join us this Sunday following the 11:00 service in the sanctuary as we prepare together for the upcoming No Kings protest.”

Church leadership also advertised a public self-defense seminar led by a martial artist, noting the instruction would use body-affirming and gender-neutral language.

These activities coincide with Talarico’s efforts to reclaim Christianity for the political Left during his Senate bid.

Talarico has previously drawn criticism from conservatives for claiming that abortion is a biblical teaching and suggesting that God is nonbinary.

He frequently opposes Republican policies, such as displaying the Ten Commandments in schools, while pursuing a divinity degree.
