Biden, Zelensky call on Russia to return control of nuclear plant to Ukraine to avoid catastrophe [Video]

President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke over the phone on Thursday to discuss the new $3 billion security assistance package for Ukraine. The two leaders also called on Russia to return control of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant to Ukraine, the White House said.
On Wednesday, the White House announced the $2.98 billion military aid package for Ukraine, coinciding with the country’s Independence Day. The package is the latest in a series of support to assist Kyiv fight off the ongoing Russian attack.
Biden “congratulated Ukraine on its Independence Day and expressed his admiration for the people of Ukraine, who have inspired the world as they defended their country’s sovereignty over the past six months,” according to a White House readout of the phone call.
“The two leaders also called for Russia to return full control of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant to Ukraine and for International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) access to the plant,” the readout said.
The Zaporizhzhya plant, which is the largest in Europe, has been under Russian control since early March. Hostilities between Russian and Ukrainian forces have intensified around the plant, raising concerns about a potentially devastating accident.
The nuclear plant was temporarily disconnected from the power grid on Thursday due to fires that started around lines connecting it to the grid.
Russia has rejected calls from Western nations to allow the IAEA inspectors to inspect the plant, but Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to open the plant up to international experts after a call last week with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Macron met with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi early Thursday and reiterated support for sending experts to the plant “as quickly as possible,” according to a readout from the Elysée.
Rebekah Koffler, a former Defense Intelligence Agency officer and author of “Putin’s Playbook: Russia’s Secret Plan to Defeat America,” told Fox News Digital that Ukraine is heavily reliant on nuclear power and shelling at Zaporizhzhia could create a catastrophe.
“This is potentially a Chernobyl-style nuclear disaster in the making,” Koffler said.
Zelensky tweeted Thursday, thanking Biden for the “unwavering” U.S. security and financial support for Ukraine amid the Russian war, which passed the six-month mark on Wednesday. There was no mention of the Zaporizhzhya plant in his tweet.

What utter garbage is spoken about Putin almost all is western propaganda. I am not a supporter of his but a bit of pragmatism is req’d
Firstly Russia is NOT the USSR, but commentators constantly write about him as if it was. Putin has rebuilt thousands of churches destroyed by the Communists he has clergymen in his Duma. He is a devout Christian and family man. He has many enemies from the old regime who he has to contendxwith and keep them ‘sweet’.
Secondly, the Ukraine debacle is almost entirely as a result of American and EU aggression in putting NATO missiles on Russias doorstep.. something he has warned about repeatedly and something the west said it would be ever do..James Baker on the fall if the Berlin wall .
People conveniently forget the 1962 Cuba crisis when the shoe was on t’other foot.
Biden has personally made $ millions out of his dealings with Ukraine biut all thuis goes unnoticed. Wake up we should be closer to Russia not at loggerheads. There are far more dangerous regimes we should be concerned about.

The Ukraine had an application to NATO since 2014 when he last took part of their country-there was ZERO chance that all the NATO countries would agree to admit it—so why attack now? Similarly why not attack Sweden and Finland because they just joined NATO-all he asked ultimately after his buffoons threatened to “nuke them” was that missiles not be stored there. Even if the Ukraine somehow petitioned to join NATao, certainly that could have been a condition-so that justification is a total lie

It’s really rich that the same people who have been shelling the plant – the Kiev cokehead and his puppetmaster, career warmonger Bitten – want it to be turned over to their custody. This is the level of insanity, deception, treachery and deception that has been going on for the last 8 years, brainwashing the public. Ukraine lost its sovereignty and independence in 2014 when the CIA/SAS/State Department backed a violent neo-Nazi putsch that overthrew Ukraine’s constitutional democratically elected government. The country was transformed into a bankrupt indebted US client-state on US tax livestock life support. It was also transformed into a defacto NATO outpost. The US-UK-NATO trained, equipped and hurled brigades and Nazi auxilliaries at the Donbass, while the puppet regimes in Kiev passed anti Russian edicts. They tried to purge the Russian language, Russian culture, Russian heritage, Russian history and ethnic Russians from Eastern Ukraine. Over those 8 years they killed 14,400 people in the Donbass according to UN figures, to a full court lamestream media blackout.
We still do not know how much of our tax livestock $$$$ was laundered by the Bittens through the CIA cutout Burisma Holdings, Ltd an its network of Cypriot banks and shell companies. We do know that they had quite the racket going on and that Hunter Bitten guided some of that $$$$ to the bioweapons labs cooking up deadly bugs targetting ethnic Russian genotypes in Ukraine. The cokehead in Kiev ordered all the files in these labs destroyed on the same day as the Russian incursion.
