The New York Knicks demonstrated their championship mettle Thursday night, crushing the Cleveland Cavaliers 109-93 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference Finals. Unlike their historic comeback in Game 1, this victory showcased dominant play from start to finish.
Cleveland opened strong with a 27-24 first quarter lead, but the Knicks seized control by halftime. The third quarter proved decisive as New York pulled away with an 18-point advantage, electrifying the Madison Square Garden faithful with an 18-0 run that echoed their fourth-quarter heroics from Game 1.
The Cavaliers showed resilience, cutting the deficit to nine points with 8:30 remaining in the fourth quarter as the Knicks offense stalled. However, OG Anunoby’s three-pointer from the left wing restored order, and Mikal Bridges’ wide-open triple with 6:12 left pushed the lead back to 13, effectively sealing the victory.
Cleveland’s defensive strategy targeted All-Star point guard Jalen Brunson with aggressive double-teams, forcing him to distribute the ball. The Cavaliers gambled that Josh Hart couldn’t capitalize on the resulting opportunities. That gamble backfired spectacularly.
Hart found his rhythm in the second half, setting a new career playoff high with a team-leading 26 points on 10-of-21 shooting, including 5-of-11 from three-point range. He also contributed seven assists, four rebounds, and two steals in a complete performance.
Brunson still made his impact felt despite the defensive attention, recording 19 points and a playoff career-high 14 assists. Karl-Anthony Towns continued his stellar postseason under Mike Brown’s coaching, notching another double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
With the lead ballooning back to 18 points, the Knicks starters exited with under two minutes remaining to a standing ovation from the Garden crowd. The team shot 52% from the field while limiting Cleveland to just 39% shooting.
The Cavaliers’ offensive struggles extended beyond field goal percentage. Despite entering the bonus with over nine minutes remaining, Cleveland converted just 69% from the free-throw line (22-of-32), missing crucial opportunities to stay competitive.
In a puzzling development, Evan Mobley scored 14 points in the first half but didn’t attempt a single shot in the second half. Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 26 points on 8-of-18 shooting, while James Harden added 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting.
The victory extends the Knicks’ playoff winning streak to nine consecutive games as they head to Cleveland for Games 3 and 4. New York’s balanced attack and suffocating defense have put them two wins away from the NBA Finals.
