WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • President Donald Trump tweeted on Wednesday, saying that the COVID-19 task force won’t be dismantled but instead be refocusing its efforts toward reopening the nation’s economy.
  • Trump’s announcement followed a day after Vice President Mike Pence said on Tuesday that White House officials were already having plans on winding down the task force.
  • According to a White House official, the White House’s declaration last Tuesday sent a wrong message and confusion to everyone. The official then said that the task force would be regrouped accordingly based on the situation of the outbreak.

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the coronavirus task force would continue indefinitely, though efforts will be diverted towards restarting the economy. The comment came just a day after the White House said that the task force would be winding down.

In his tweet, Trump said that “Safety and Opening Up Our Country Again” would be the task force’s main goal.

The initial plan of dismantling the task force was retracted as cases and fatalities outside New York continue to rise and yet the states are moving to relax their restrictions.

An official from the White House admitted on Wednesday that announcing the termination of the task force sent a wrong message and confusion. According to the official (speaking on the condition of anonymity), the composition of the group would change depending on the crisis development.

In his tweet on Wednesday, Trump said that the White House “may add or subtract people to it, as appropriate. The Task Force will also be very focused on Vaccines & Therapeutics.”

The president already acted up on his goal of reopening the country when he visited an Arizona face mask factory on Tuesday to demonstrate his agenda of relaxing the ‘stay-at-home’ orders despite the pandemic threat. Trump was mask-less albeit guidelines that mask should be worn inside the factory at all times.

The almost eight-hour flight marked Trump’s effort to show that the country is taking steps to go back to “normal” and that he himself is returning to his regular routines as the president.

“I’m not saying anything is perfect, and yes, will some people be affected? Yes. Will some people be affected badly? Yes. But we have to get our country open and we have to get it open soon,” Trump said, admitting the implication of economic restarting.

The president’s top priority is to reopen the struggling economy as allies come in full support in recent weeks. The GOP believes Trump’s re-election bid would rely on American’s perception of how immediate the economy could bounce back from months of shutdown.

On Tuesday at the White House, Vice President Mike Pence announced that discussions have already begun about winding down its coronavirus task force, which already lessened its meeting recently.

“I think we’re having conversations about that and about what the proper time is for the task force to complete its work and for the ongoing efforts to take place on an agency by agency level,” he said.
