WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • From being the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, New York’s number of positive cases has dwindled amid the resurgence of record-breaking 40,000 daily cases across the US.
  • Governor Andrew Cuomo says the Trump administration is “in denial” about the way it is handling the pandemic and the measures it has undertaken to mitigate the spread.
  • The governors of New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey have imposed a 14-day quarantine for visitors from the states with high numbers of positive cases as a mitigating resurgence measure.

As one of the hardest-hit states and the epicenter of the pandemic in the US, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says that the Trump administration is not telling the American people the truth about the coronavirus situation because it is still saying the same thing even after three months. The administration has failed in handling the pandemic and containing it.

With daily infections rising across the US particularly in Florida, Texas, and California, hitting record-high numbers at 5,000 to 7,000 daily, Vice President Pence, in a White House coronavirus task force briefing even sought to reassure the public.

Cuomo said that from being the epicenter, New York has had a decline in positive cases because of the mitigating measures it has undertaken like diligence in complying with rules. It has even lifted its restrictions and its businesses allowed in a limited capacity to operate.

Add to this, with the rising numbers of coronavirus cases in the South and West, Cuomo and the governors of Connecticut and New Jersey have imposed a 14-day quarantine for those going inside their states as a precautionary measure to prevent the re-entry and resurgence of the virus.

Measures for a possible resurgence are also on track like the availability of testing kits, personal protective equipment, and hospital beds.

Cuomo says that this is not a second wave but a continuation of the first wave that they have experienced.

“It was a failed effort to stop the first wave in the country,” Cuomo said. “And as you pointed out, New York is in a totally different place.”

The NY governor added, “This is a virus, it doesn’t respond to politics. You can’t tweet at it, you have to treat it. And we never did that.”
