Democratic Washington Representative Pramila Jayapal claimed on Friday that illegal immigrants deserve reparations for trauma allegedly caused by previous border enforcement. During a House floor hearing, she suggested a future administration should pursue criminal charges against those who implemented crackdowns on illegal immigration.

“We need real accountability because at the end of the day, the people that have been inflicting this harm need to be prosecuted,” Jayapal said at the hearing.

“They need to be brought before us and they need to be held account for the trauma that they have created and we are going to have to have some form of reparation.”

Jayapal currently serves as the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security and Enforcement. She previously chaired the Congressional Progressive Caucus for six years and remains a vocal critic of federal immigration enforcement actions.

The push for reparations comes as Democrats also demand new restrictions on ICE, including requirements for judicial warrants for all apprehensions. These efforts persist despite President Trump winning a decisive mandate to secure the border and designate foreign gangs as terrorist organizations.
