WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Rep. Liz Cheney said she will leave the GOP if former President Donald Trump is the 2024 Republican Party’s White House nominee.
  • Cheney said she would be willing to campaign for Democrats in 2022 and 2024.
  • The outgoing congresswoman lost her bid for reelection in the August primary against Trump-endorsed challenger Harriet Hageman.

GOP Rep. Liz Cheney said over the weekend that she will leave the Republican Party if former President Donald Trump is the party’s 2024 presidential nominee. It is also the first time Cheney vowed to campaign for Democrats going against Republican candidates who believe that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Trump.

“I certainly will do whatever it takes to make sure Donald Trump isn’t anywhere close to the Oval Office,” Cheney (R-Wyo.) said at the Texas Tribune Festival Saturday night.

The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney added that she’s going to make sure Trump is “not the nominee.” She went on to say that “if he is the nominee, I won’t be a Republican.”

When asked about Kari Lake, the GOP gubernatorial candidate for Arizona, who has pushed Trump’s claim that he was beaten by President Joe Biden with the help of voter fraud.

“I am going to do everything I can to make sure that Kari Lake is not elected,” she said.

When asked if that meant she would be campaigning for Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, Lake’s Democratic opponent, Cheney answered: “Yes, it does.”

Cheney, a vocal Trump critic, when voted to impeach him over his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. She also accepted to be the vice chairman of the House select committee that is investigating the Capitol attack.

Cheney has been serving as the representative for Wyoming’s at-large congressional district since 2017 but in August, she lost her primary to Trump-endorsed challenger Harriet Hageman.

Only two of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump survived their primary challenges. Three others lost their primaries and four chose to either retire or not seek reelection.

There was speculation about a potential presidential bid for Cheney in 2024, but she has not made any official announcements. Cheney’s term will end on Jan. 3, 2023.

Didn’t she basically leave the Republican Party anyways? She never did her elected job which was to represent her voters wants . She only represented her screwed up opinion with complete disregard to who she was supposed to represent. Just because she is to fat and ugly to get Trumps attention or whatever her problem with him is. It’s not her choice it’s her constituents choice. So Democrat or Republican she is still only going to represent her opinion. What a joke her running for President. She isn’t running anything anymore except her fat lips. Good riddance!

The Republican party will be HAPPY when she is gone. She NEVER was a REAL Republican, always been a Democrat, so good bye and do not let the door his you in the ass on your way out.
