Nanny Testifies in Shocking Virginia Love Triangle

Clear Facts
- Juliana Peres Magalhães, a former Brazilian au pair, is charged in connection with the 2023 double murder of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan in Virginia.
- Brendan Banfield, a former IRS agent, stands accused of orchestrating the murders to hide his affair with Magalhães.
- Magalhães admitted to a sexual relationship with Banfield and detailed his planning and alibi creation on the witness stand.
Juliana Peres Magalhães has been implicated in the deaths of her employer Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan, allegedly as part of a plot led by Brendan Banfield.
Brendan Banfield faces charges for orchestrating the crime, which prosecutors say was intended to conceal his affair with Magalhães.
“Those two individuals had no reason to know each other but for the plotting and planning of Brendan Banfield,” prosecutor Jenna Sands said.
Magalhães told investigators that she and Banfield encountered Ryan attacking Christine Banfield and claimed they both fired at Ryan to stop him.
Magalhães later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is scheduled for sentencing after Banfield’s trial concludes.
Defense attorney John Carroll said, “The whole reason she was arrested was to flip her against my client.”
Testifying in court, Magalhães described how her relationship with Banfield began as professional but turned intimate in August 2022.
“We barely spoke,” Magalhães said. “My relationship was mostly with Christine and [the couple’s child].”
She testified that Banfield discussed plans to kill his wife during a trip in October 2022, rather than pursue divorce.
“He mentioned his plan to get rid of [Christine],” Magalhães told the prosecution. “Initially, he didn’t know what he would do. He just mentioned that he would think about it [and] let me know when he thought about it.”
According to prosecutors, Banfield used his wife’s email and photo to create a fake profile on a fetish website to lure Ryan to the home.
“He knew that we needed to have some alibis,” Magalhães testified. “He knew that he needed to change his routine a few weeks prior. So it wouldn’t be odd that he wasn’t, you know, just at McDonald’s on that day, specifically.”
Prosecutors claim that Banfield and Magalhães used the website to invite men into their home under false pretenses, eventually choosing Ryan as the target.
“He made Brendan feel confident enough that he would be the person to play the role, which means being aggressive and holding her down and coming over to the house and bringing stuff and all that,” Magalhães said.
Jenna Sands stated, “Brendan created the narrative that Christine [desperately wanted to be raped]. Posing as Christine, he told Joe what to do: Come to the home in Reston. The door will be unlocked. Christine will be asleep in bed. Come straight upstairs, cut off her clothing, tie her, rape her. Simple and fun.”
Banfield allegedly established an alibi by being at a nearby McDonald’s ahead of the planned attack, as coordinated with Magalhães.
