WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • President Trump’s campaign pushes on for the presidential race recount in Georgia, claiming without evidence that there’s widespread fraud.
  • Georgia’s vote result showed that Biden had a 0.25% margin of lead over Trump, and state laws allow up to a 0.5% limit.
  • The Trump legal team clarified that the request was necessary and a usual response provided by the U.S constitution.

On Saturday, President Donald Trump’s camp requested to recount the votes in Georgia, only a day following the results certified by the state officials indicating that Joe Biden won at the region.

Trump’s legal team also continued to push its rampant fraud claims, even with the absence of substantiated proof.

Georgia’s vote records indicated that Biden took a lead of  12,670 against

Trump over the estimated 5 million total votes, which gives a 0.25% margin. According to state law, if the margin is smaller than 0.5%, a recount will be allowed. Republican Gov. Brian Kemp has certified Georgia’s account of its 16 presidential electors.

The Trump team submitted the complaint letter requesting the recount to the office of the state secretary.

In a statement, the Trump legal team explained that the request for a recount was necessary to ensure that every vote is counted, citing that the exercise is provided for under the U.S. Constitution and Georgia State Law.

The president and his camp still push for verification in Georgia, including signature matching and other related crucial security measures.

While authenticating the state’s electors on Friday, Kemp also raised questions over signatures. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, Republican, however,  restated his trust in the results, writing in a Washington Post opinion column on Saturday that the state’s current voting system was the most secure in history.

The signatures on the envelopes and absentee ballot applications undergo obligatory checking once received to erase doubts.

Later that Saturday, Raffensperger ordered his deputy to formally advise county election directors to be ready for a recount along with political parties so they can deploy witnesses at the specific locations.

In his instruction, Raffensperger said the ballots would be thoroughly inspected to show with the counties how vital accuracy and transparency is when it comes to the election process.

The recount process involves scanners that read and chart the votes.

Election staff in the county have done a complete manual recount of all the ballots for the presidential race as a mandatory audit required by law.

State law obliges that one race must be reviewed manually to guarantee the accuracy of ballot-counting machines counted the ballots accurately, and for this process, Raffensperger’s choice was the presidential race, especially with the margin is close.

Trump has frequently called the audit a “joke, ”  claiming in a tweet that there are thousands of ballots that are fraudulent.  Twitter flagged the post because of having disputed information.

During the audit, votes that were not counted yet discovered in many counties will require recertification of the election results before the state certifies the ballots.
