Billboard Reflects Shift in Political Sentiment

Clear Facts

  • A Jerusalem billboard that once praised President Joe Biden now celebrates President-elect Donald Trump with a welcoming message.
  • The billboard’s change reflects a shift in sentiment following Biden’s critical stance on Israel’s war efforts.
  • Polls indicate strong support for Trump among Israelis, with 66% backing him in the U.S. presidential election.

In a significant shift of sentiment, a prominent billboard in Jerusalem has been updated to celebrate the victory of President-elect Donald Trump. The sign, which is strategically placed along Emek Refaim Street, a heavily American area known as the German Colony, now reads: “Welcome back Dear friend!” alongside a smiling image of Trump.

This is a stark contrast to just a few weeks earlier in October 2023, when the same billboard displayed a message of gratitude to President Joe Biden. The previous display featured Biden with both the American and Israeli flags and the word “Thanks!” This was a gesture of appreciation for Biden’s visit and the support he provided in terms of weapons following the October 7 terror attack.

However, as Biden’s stance became more critical of Israel, particularly in his attempts to restrain its war efforts, the image was removed. The current Trump billboard is reminiscent of the enthusiastic street decorations that appeared during the opening of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem in 2018. At that time, locals were effusive in their praise for Trump, who was lauded for fulfilling a longstanding bipartisan promise.

Recent polling data underscores the strong support Trump enjoys among Israelis. A notable survey showed Trump commanding a significant 66% support, while Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, lagged far behind with only 17%.

The hope among Israelis is that Trump’s leadership will allow them to decisively defeat their adversaries and forge peace agreements with Arab states eager to move beyond historical conflicts.
