WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Gov. Newsom ordered the closing of non-essential businesses in California following a sudden spike in coronavirus cases.
  • The governor said the response was due to the people’s non-compliance with the restriction measures.
  • California now has more than 329,100 COVID-19 cases and has over 7,000 casualties.

On Monday,  California Gov. Gavin Newsom prolonged the shutting of clubs and restaurants statewide and instructed churches, gyms, and styling salons locked in many places as COVID-19 cases continue to surge in the country’s most inhabited region.

On July 1, Gov. Newsom called for the closure of various establishments in 19 counties, which are currently facing a sudden rise in the number of coronavirus cases.

The governor also expanded the order on Monday to statewide coverage. The Democrat Californian also enforced extra measures on the 30 counties, which now have more cases,  including San Diego and Los Angeles, two of the most populated states. The restriction includes the stoppage of church services, indoor mall operations, and shutting down of offices for non-essential businesses.

The order will take effect right away, and Newsom said the move has resulted from the non- compliance of many people with the safety measures in place.

While the governor did not mention schools on his announcement, San Diego and Los Angeles announced that they would only opt for online classes when they resume in a few weeks.

LA Unified is considered the second-biggest public school district in the U.S.

In March, California was among the first states in the country to implement a compulsory stay-at-home order across the state to curb the spread of C OVID-19. The measured has seemed to be working in succeeding weeks while other states faced grim records of coronavirus infection.

But the quarantine orders overwhelmed one of the world’s most vibrant economy, with over 7.5 million workers filing for unemployment aids. Newsom responded by immediately letting most firms reopen by May.

Like other regions that took the same steps, a succeeding spike in new cases and hospital admissions led him to execute new measures recently.

The Democrat governor claimed his system of opening and closing companies is like a regulator switch. He explained the state needs to be flexible as health authorities observe the COVID-19 status.

On Sunday, California recorded 8,358 new coronavirus infections. The number of cases has grown by almost 50% in the last two weeks, while hospitalizations have shot up to 28%.

In total, California has reached over 329,100 coronavirus cases and exceeded 7,000 deaths. Some reports said though the infections are perhaps higher since some people are asymptomatic, and testing was limited.
