WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • The state of California has surpassed New York in the number of coronavirus cases recorded in a single day.
  • California reports a total of 12,807 new cases in one day, and the state now reached over 413,576 infections.
  • At first, California was successful in curbing the spread of COVID-19, but the situation worsened in recent weeks.

California’s state reached a grim milestone with its number of coronavirus infections in a day, toppling New York with the most number of cases in the U.S.

On Wednesday, Governor Gavin Newsom announced the state recorded 12,807 confirmed new cases on Tuesday alone. The latest numbers make the total number of infections in California reach over 413,576 from the time the outbreak started.

While California exceeded the COVID-19 cases in New York,  the state with a population of  40 million was still behind Gotham in other aspects of the virus. New York still has the highest coronavirus death toll in the nation with over 32,500, and its ratio of confirmed cases of around 2,100 in every 100,000 is double California’s percentage.

As the infection continues to rise, the California Hospital Association urges the state to provide more hospital beds.

Carmela Coyle, president, and CEO of the association, said that around 45,000 of California’s 50,000 hospital beds have already been taken. She added that while the hospitals in the state have 20,000 beds, the medical centers should be ready to receive more patients.

The spikes in the coronavirus cases were following California’s state reopening since May. Newsom has then implemented closure of clubs and indoor restaurants while ordering stricter statewide measures.

During his presser on Wednesday, the governor said the coronavirus’s seven-day rate was recorded at 7.6%. He urged Californians to maintain wearing face protection to curb the spread of coronavirus, adding that the state is to equip the frontliners with more personal protective equipment in addition to millions of N95 and surgical masks already distributed.

California succeeded in flattening the spread of the COVID-19 virus at first, but the situation has taken a different turn with new cases mounting in the last few weeks.

By March, citizens are asked to remain at home. Health officials barred all non-essential businesses from opening. The state opened its economy again by May and June, and residents started shopping and dining on stores and restaurants,  which led to the surge of new cases.

Recently, over 50% of the county’s recent cases are from people under 41 years of age. Los Angeles has 4,154 coronavirus casualties, and its public health department reported cases of exceeding 161,670.
