Islanders Make a Stunning Coaching Change in Late Playoff Push

Clear Facts
- General Manager Mathieu Darche fired head coach Patrick Roy with only four games remaining.
- The team appointed Peter DeBoer as the new head coach to try to secure a postseason spot.
- New York holds a slim one-point lead for the final divisional playoff position.
The New York Islanders have dismissed head coach Patrick Roy despite holding a narrow lead in the Eastern Conference playoff standings. General Manager Mathieu Darche announced that Peter DeBoer will take over the bench effective immediately.
The coaching change comes as the Islanders endure a four-game losing streak and seven losses in their last ten games. New York currently sits in third place in the Metropolitan Division with 89 points.
Internal pressure increased as both the Philadelphia Flyers and Columbus Blue Jackets moved within one point of the Islanders. The front office hopes DeBoer can provide the spark needed to stabilize the team for the final week of the regular season.
DeBoer joins the Islanders after most recently serving as the head coach for the Dallas Stars. He brings extensive experience to Long Island, having coached more than 1,200 career NHL games across five franchises.
The Islanders are not alone in late-season leadership changes, as the Vegas Golden Knights also recently replaced their head coach. New York aims to break a two-year drought and return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs under the new direction.
