WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • The majority of American voters believe that coronavirus restrictions should not be lifted yet.
  • The poll showed that many Americans are worried that the crisis will affect them personally.
  • Almost 50 percent of respondents said that Trump did not handle the COVID-19 pandemic well.

Nearly sixty percent of American voters are apprehensive of the plans in lifting the current coronavirus restrictions. Most voters believe that easying on the limitations too soon can lead to a surge in COVID-19 cases and fatalities.

The poll, released on Sunday by NBC News/Wall Street Journal showed that 58 percent of poll respondents are worried about the relaxing of the measures. In comparison, only 32 percent are more concerned about a longer duration of the restrictions.

Three percent of the American voters say they are worried about both scenarios, according to the poll.

As observed, votes had partisan partialities on the situations presented, and this was manifested by the latest protests across the country in some areas of states such as Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee.

The surveys also indicated that most Democrats, with 77 percent, along with 57 percent coming from independents, are more troubled regarding the coronavirus outbreak. The Republicans, however, do not share the same sentiment, as only 48 percent are more worried about the economy, and 39 percent are concerned with the health crisis.

The poll was conducted under a condition where COVID-19 restrictions varied depending on the state; some are tougher than the others.

Moreover, the poll also showed that there was rising anxiety amongst the American voters that the coronavirus would affect them on personal levels. When asked how worried are they on the possibility of a family member being infected with coronavirus,  33 percent of the respondents admitted that they were very anxious, and  40 percent are somehow worried.

Meanwhile,  only 3 percent claimed the outbreak had not affected their lives, while the 77 percent majority said that the crisis had an impact on them, either in a somewhat or preeminent way possible.

The approval rating of  U.S President Donald Trump remained unaffected at 46 percent as compared to the last month’s survey, and 51 percent of the poll respondents say they’re not in favor of his actions.

The results are also in line with Trump’s rating in this year’s BC/WSJ polls.

The poll also pointed out that the president’s numbers trailed in another critical area, which is the upcoming national elections.  With only a tight margin of 49 to 42 percent, American voters said they would choose apparent Democratic presidential nominee, Joe Biden, over the incumbent,  Trump.

Forty-five percent of those who participated also thought that Trump mishandled the crisis from day one.

Sixty-nine percent of the respondents voted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) can be trusted in giving information on the coronavirus outbreak, while no less than 60 percent also gave the same level of confidence with their governors, and Dr. Fauci as well.

The poll was made between April 13-15 and conducted with 900 registered voters.
