State officials reinforce curfews in response to growing protests [Video]

As George Floyd’s death continues to spark protests across the country, authorities in various cities nationwide urge the public to observe curfews.

In Detroit, Mayor Mike Duggan issued a curfew on Sunday beginning from 8pm and ending at 5am.

According to an NBC Detroit affiliate WDIV report, Duggan said that “people cannot be on public streets or in public areas.”

In Los Angeles City, local officials announced on Sunday that the current 8pm curfew, which began on Saturday, would be extended. Last Saturday, the city had another violent protest four nights in a row when protesters overtook vehicles such as buses and police cars.

Mayor Eric Garcetti announced via Twitter that residents are advised to stay inside their homes except for those who need to go to work and anyone needing or providing medical care.

Beverly Hills will also be under road restrictions.

In Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a civil emergency was declared by Mayor Brenda Bethune on Sunday after the city received a violent threat concerning the protests over George Floyd’s death.

The city forfeited a 1pm protest and placed a 6pm curfew on Sunday. Business establishments were obliged to follow the protocol.

Meanwhile, In Philadelphia, Mayor Jim Kenney was planning to stretch the city’s curfew and place the City Center area of downtown under lockdown.

“We’re locking down Center City today and tonight and probably extend the curfew,” Kenney told NBC Philadelphia on Sunday.

Officials asked businesses to close early as part of enforcing the 8pm curfew.

In Denver City, Colorado, Mayor Michael Hancock also imposed a curfew on Sunday from 8pm to 5am. Hancock said the weekend curfews are set to help “protect people and property.”

Cleveland also announced a downtown curfew starting Sunday noon up until Monday 8am. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine tapped the National Guard to contain the strikes in the city.

In Utah, the state’s National Guard was also deployed to the Salt Lake City on Saturday. The city imposed a curfew which began on Saturday night and will last until Monday 6am. 

Mayor Erin Mendenhall issued the curfew order to pacify the protests that hit them on Saturday.
