Clear Facts

  • The Sudanese army is encircling Khartoum airport in its battle with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to two military sources.
  • The army has captured the presidential palace and the Tiba al-Hassanab camp, representing important advances in the capital.
  • The ongoing war has displaced 12.5 million people and triggered a massive humanitarian crisis, with no end in sight.

Sudanese military sources report their forces are now encircling the main airport in Khartoum as they attempt to oust the RSF from its last stronghold in the capital.

This move comes after government troops captured the presidential palace and Tiba al-Hassanab camp in key southern areas of Khartoum.

The conflict continues to divide Sudan, as each faction consolidates territory and authorities warn of the risk of the country splitting into rival zones.

Witnesses noted the RSF appear to be concentrating their troops in southern Khartoum, perhaps to aid their withdrawal over bridges to Omdurman.

Army operations in central Sudan represent their latest push to reclaim districts previously held by the RSF, while the RSF has cemented control in the west, intensifying the divide.

The United Nations calls this the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, citing famine and disease amid unrelenting violence.

Over 12.5 million people have fled their homes, with millions forced to neighboring countries for safety.

The army and RSF were briefly allied after jointly staging a coup in 2021 that disrupted Sudan’s democratic transition away from the former Islamist regime.

Their partnership quickly fell apart amid disputes over integrating the RSF into the regular armed forces, command structures, and the timeline of a political transition.

“Major points of dispute included a timetable for the RSF to integrate into the regular armed forces, the chain of command between army and RSF leaders, and the question of civilian oversight.”

As fighting broke out, the Sudanese army possessed greater resources, but the RSF held ground throughout many neighborhoods in Khartoum and advanced in Darfur.

With renewed gains, army leaders are aiming to cement their control in Sudan’s center, even as humanitarian conditions continue to worsen.
