WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • The World Health Organization reported on Sunday that it hit a record of more than 183,000 new coronavirus cases in a day.
  • More than 60 percent of new deaths come from the Americas — mainly Brazil and the US.
  • According to experts, the expanded testing efforts and widespread reach of the virus could have contributed to the rapid rise of new COVID-19 cases.

The World Health Organization recorded the highest daily count of new coronavirus cases — at more than 183,000 confirmed cases on Sunday.

More than 60 percent of new fatalities came from the American continents. Brazil topped the list, having 54,771 new cases, followed by the US with 36,617 and India with 15,400 new cases.

In the United States, the spread of the virus is seen across the West and South. Arizona recorded over 3,100 new cases and 26 deaths while Nevada also recorded a new high of 445 cases.

During his campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Saturday, President Donald Trump said that the US has conducted over 25 million testings, and the downside was that it yielded more cases.

The figures for new cases continue to rise quickly not only in the US and Brazil, but also in South Africa and other countries, particularly in Latin America.

South Africa witnessed almost 5,000 new cases with 46 deaths on Saturday alone.

In Europe, Spain has lifted its national state of emergency from a three-month lockdown. About 47 million residents can now travel around the country for the first time. It also revoked its 14-day quarantine order for Britain visitors and the 26 European countries that permit visa-free travel.

In England, imposed lockdown refrained residents from watching the sunrise at the ancient circle of Stonehenge on Sunday. It’s the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere which marks the summer solstice.

“You can’t cancel the sunrise,” druid Arthur Pendragon told the BBC.

In Germany, a single meatpacking plant had over 1,000 new infections. The regional government placed a quarantine for all 6,500 plant workers, managers and their family members.

Meanwhile in Asia, China and South Korea posted new COVID-19 cases on Sunday that threatened to hamper their restoration.

In Beijing, officials recorded 25 new cases. The Chinese capital went into another lockdown last week and required a ‘COVID-19 negative test’ result from anybody who needs to leave the city.

In Seoul, almost 200 new infections have been recorded from employees at a door-to-door sales company. Additional 70 new cases were linked to a table tennis club. Officials, however, are doubtful of implementing stricter social distancing measures that could again hamper their economy.

According to experts, the surge of the new cases could emanate from factors such as more expanded testing and broader reach of infection.
