Frank R. James has been identified as a person of interest in connection with the subway shooting incident in Brooklyn on Tuesday morning, New York City authorities have confirmed. He still remains at large as of Tuesday evening.

The incident happened at around 8:24 am Tuesday morning as a Manhattan-bound N train approached the 36th St. station in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

An armed suspect, described as an approximately 5-foot-5 Black male with a heavy build, was seen sporting a gas mask and a construction vest. He set off a smoke canister inside a subway train and station before firing a handgun 33 times.

A total of at least 29 people were hurt in the incident.

At least 10 people on the subway car and on the platform were shot, while thirteen people suffered injuries from falling down, smoke inhalation, or a panic attack.

Police closed off the surrounding area while they waited for a highly specialized emergency services unit and a bomb squad.

Victims were treated at hospitals for gunshot wounds and other conditions. Five people were in critical condition but none of the injuries were life-threatening, and all were expected to survive.

At the scene of the crime, police recovered a credit card that led to the identification of James. The card was used to rent a U-Haul van found near the incident. Officers also recovered a handgun, multiple smoke devices, and a hatchet, among other items.

Investigators believe that the suspect had at least two extended magazines, but the weapon jammed, preventing him from firing again. An urgent trace on the firearm has been conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The motive is still unclear, according to Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell. NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said that they are still looking into his “connection to the attack.”

James reportedly has addresses in Wisconsin and Philadelphia, so his ties to New York are also unclear.

Mayor Eric Adams’ Press Secretary Fabien Levy said that James allegedly made comments about the mayor, prompting increased security “out of an abundance of caution.”

According to authorities, someone with the same name mentioned New York, homelessness, and the mayor on social media.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams told local affiliate FOX 5 New York that investigators are pursuing “several leads,” and expressed confidence that they will soon make an arrest.

Authorities have offered a $50,000 reward for information regarding the incident.
