Ohio authorities have arrested Alexis Scarborough, 34, and Denard Bishop, 39, following a near-fatal fentanyl overdose of their young son on his 4th birthday in November. The couple was taken into custody and appeared in court last week to face charges related to the incident.
The child was discovered at Bishop’s residence, struggling to breathe due to agonal breathing, a condition characterized by gasping due to a lack of oxygen. He was immediately rushed to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for treatment of a fentanyl overdose.
According to authorities, Scarborough was visiting the child at the time of the overdose, and Bishop was allegedly present in the residence. Scarborough appeared in court on Wednesday, charged with endangering children.
She entered a plea of not guilty. Her attorney filed a motion to have her released on her own recognizance so she could continue her employment at a local hotel. However, records from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office indicate that she has not been released, and her bond is currently set at $10,000.
Bishop had his court appearance on Friday. He is accused of neglect and faces at least one charge of child endangerment.
Clear Thoughts (op-ed)
A heartbreaking story unfolds in Cincinnati, Ohio, where parents Alexis Scarborough and Denard Bishop are facing charges in connection with their 4-year-old son’s near-fatal fentanyl overdose. This incident, a stark reminder of the opioid crisis plaguing our country, is a symptom of a society that has strayed from traditional values and the sanctity of family.
Scarborough and Bishop’s actions are a horrific example of parental neglect. Their child, on the cusp of his life, was thrust into a battle for survival due to their reckless endangerment. It is a sad reflection on the state of our society when parents are the perpetrators of such harm to their own offspring.
While the legal process is underway, we must not lose sight of the broader issue here. The opioid crisis continues to devastate families and communities across America. It is a symptom of a deeper societal decay, and it’s high time we address this issue head-on.
