WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • On Tuesday, the FBI released videos of an individual who planted pipe bombs outside the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee headquarters in Washington, DC last January 5.
  • Authorities discovered the explosives on January 6 as pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol building.
  • The FBI is providing a $100,000 reward for the identification of the suspect.

The FBI revealed new security footage on Tuesday, showing a person who put bombs outside the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee headquarters in Washington, DC, which were found the same day of the infamous Capitol siege.

The agency said that two pipe bombs near both parties’ headquarters were planted the night before the Capitol riot.

Videos showed that a masked individual, wearing a hood and Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes, was seen roaming around the neighborhood. The suspect was seen carrying the explosive devices, which officials believed were planted around 7:30 to 8:30 pm on January 5.

The FBI released a wanted poster of the offender back in January.

Law enforcement authorities such as the FBI, ATF, US Capitol Police, and DC Metropolitan Police have responded to both locations as the explosives were discovered at about 1 pm ET on January 6. It was the same time when the pro-Trump had already broken inside the Capitol building, based on the account of the acting chief of the Capitol.

“We believe the information released today will help someone recognize the suspect or something about them,” Steven D’Antuono, the FBI’s assistant director in charge, said in a video statement Tuesday.

Per D’Antuono, the individual who wore a facemask with a gray sweatshirt and black and gray Nike shoes was believed to be the suspect who planted the bombs.

“One device was placed in an alley behind the RNC. The other was placed next to a park bench near the DNC,” he said.

The FBI also urged the public to provide any information about individuals who underwent behavior change before, during, and after the January 6 Capitol riot.

“This could include making travel plans to Capitol Hill or researching the locations of the DNC and RNC,” D’Antuono said, as he also pleaded for information about somebody who may have bought threaded pipe and kitchen timers before the insurrection.

Together with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the FBI is giving information reward amounting to $100,000 to any significant information that would lead to the recognition of the individual who planted the explosives.
