WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Cindy McCain, the late GOP Senator John McCain’s wife, has endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.
  • Cindy highlighted her family’s longstanding friendship with the Bidens, saying that “he [Joe] supports the troops and knows what it means for someone who has served.”
  • The McCain family had a rugged relationship with Trump as the president made derogatory remarks about the late senator during his 2016 campaign.

On Tuesday, Cindy McCain, widow of the late senator and former GOP presidential nominee John McCain, endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

Citing her historic friendship with the Biden family and their common ground as parents of children who are in the military, McCain declared her support for the former vice president.

“He supports the troops and knows what it means for someone who has served,” McCain said in a phone interview. “Not only to love someone who has served, but understands what it means to send a child into combat. We’ve been great friends for many years, but we have a common thread in that we are Blue Star families.”

Biden’s recent endorsement from McCain could help him gain votes from Republicans dissatisfied with Trump’s leadership. It could also help in stepping-up his chance in winning Arizona, a key swing state that was represented by McCain in the Congress for more than three decades.

“I decided to take a stand, and hopefully other people will see the same thing. Other women particularly,” McCain said. “You may have to step out of your comfort zone a little bit, but Biden is by far the best candidate in the race.”

Since becoming qualified to vote, McCain noted that she has pursued her parents’ guidance and has not voted for a Democrat. Despite publicizing her support to Biden, she said that she has no plans of registering as a Democrat.

On Tuesday, Biden told his donors that he was anticipating McCain’s support “because of what (Trump) talks about how my son and John and others who are heroes, who served their country. You know, he said they’re ‘losers, suckers.’”

Biden was referring to Trump’s reported remarks of disrespecting the fallen American troops. The president denied that he made the comments even if it was validated first by The Atlantic, and shortly verified by other news outlets.

Initially, McCain was not expected to make a public declaration of his support for Biden. But during the Democratic National Convention last month, she lent her voice that was used in a video clip that highlighted her late husband and Biden’s close relationship.

McCain’s friendship with the Bidens started when John was designated to be a military aide for Joe, a senator back then, during an overseas trip. The Biden couple introduced John and Cindy to each other.

Members of John McCain’s family had a rough relationship with Trump which stemmed in 2016 during his presidential campaign as he disparaged the late Arizona senator.
