WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Monday supported President Donald Trump’s move to pursue legal action against the election results.
  • McConnell said that the media does not have the authority to proclaim the election winner.
  • Currently, only four Republican senators have congratulated President-elect Joe Biden.

On Monday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) backed President Donald Trump’s refusal to concede to Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. Since last week, Trump continued to make baseless claims of widespread voter fraud and was unlikely to concede.

Speaking at the senate floor, McConnell said that the president was “100% within his rights” to seek legal action and ask for recounts in a few states.

“No states have yet certified their election results. I believe the president may have legal challenges underway in at least five states,” he said.

“We have the tools and the institutions we need to address any concerns,” McConnell said. He also argued that the Constitution doesn’t give “wealthy media corporations” the authority to proclaim election winners.

McConnell also lauded the GOP victory against Democrats as they would continue to hold the Senate majority. Those Republican winners, though, were projected by the same media networks whom he criticized for declaring Biden as President-elect.

So far, only four GOP senators recognized Biden’s win ━ Susan Collins (ME.), Lisa Murkowski (AK.), Mitt Romney (UT.), and Ben Sasse (NE.). They congratulated the former vice president on his return to the White House.

Leaders around the world have also extended their congratulations and well-wishes to the Democratic presidential tandem.

According to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Republican senators should acknowledge the reality that Trump has lost the battle.

“Lawsuits must have basis in facts and evidence, and make no mistake, there has been no evidence of any significant or widespread voter fraud. Joe Biden won this election fair and square,” he said.

This year’s election found no evidence of widespread fraud. Major television networks have projected Biden’s victory per his significant lead against Trump in several swing states. For instance, Biden’s lead in Pennsylvania was over 40,000 votes.
