WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell moves to block the voting of $2,000 stimulus aid, insinuating that the increase could be included on direct payment checks bill along with other two Trump proposals.
  • However, the attempt to put up all Trump’s proposals could wane the Democratic support for such legislation.
  • Democrats plan for a stand-alone vote on a bill to increase the check payments from the original $600 to $2,000.

On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., barred an effort by Democrats to push a separate vote on adding an amount to the newly passed direct check payments from $600 to $2,000.

It was reported that on Monday, that both Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., Senate Democratic Leader,  and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., attempted to get consensus for the Senate to take up a bill that received 273-134  vote in the House.

The Republican leader did not explain right away the reason for his objection, but the Senate’s rules allow any member could block attempts to arrange passing bills and votes.

McConnell indicated, though, that he could include the increase in direct payment checks, with a revoke of a tech firm shield that has arisen as a number one target for President Trump and election-linked inquiries.

President Donald Trump tweeted from his Mar-a-Lago resort, calling for action: “Give the people $2000 not $600. They have suffered enough.”

In Trump’s statement upon approving the $2.3 trillion package, he mentioned the Senate would begin the voting process that will tackle the three subjects as well.

The Majority Leader added that these three main issues the president has connected would be prioritized by the Senate this week.

The GOP senator did not give any further information during his speech on the floor of how he may put the measures together. He filed later, however, legislation that would increase the check payment’s amount, revoke a legal buffer for tech firms called Section 230,  and set-up a commission that will probe November polls.

He also initiated the course for putting his bill and the House-voted measure, the CASH Act, on the calendar of the Senate, that will make the two legislations open for voting but there’s no assurance that they are opened up.

But attempting the stimulus aids to Section 230 or with Trump’s unproven massive election fraud allegation would virtually weaken Democratic backing for such bill.

In a statement on Tuesday, Senator Schumer criticized McConnell’s bill, saying that McConnell surely can make $2,000 aid a reality but stops it immediately, attempting to deny Americans the opportunity to have the survival check.

Republican Senator Pat Toomey, during a CNN interview on Tuesday also warned that he would not agree to hold a vote on adding more on the primary check amount.

Minus the support of every senator, the Senate is likely to argue on Trump’s veto of an unconnected shield bill up until Friday or Saturday, giving the limited time to discuss and vote on a payment aid proposal before the 117th Congress commences at Sunday noon.

Democrats push for a stand-alone vote on legislation to increase the direct aid checks from $600 to $2,000.
