Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell is being treated for a concussion after falling at a hotel dinner in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday evening. The Kentucky senator was attending a dinner for the Senate Leadership Fund, a campaign committee aligned with him, at the Waldorf Astoria hotel when the incident occurred.

McConnell, who is 81 years old, is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days, but his office did not provide further details about his condition or how long he may be absent from the Senate.

Concussions can be serious injuries that take time to recover from, and even a single incident of concussion can limit a person’s abilities as they recover.

McConnell’s absence from the Senate could impact the Republican minority’s ability to operate, as the Democrats currently hold a narrow 51-49 majority.

McConnell has a history of health issues, including a shoulder fracture in 2019 that required surgery. The Senate had just started a summer recess at the time, and he worked from home for several weeks as he recovered.

McConnell is often reluctant to discuss his private life, but he has spoken publicly about his early childhood experience fighting polio and his difficulties climbing stairs in adulthood. Senators leaving a Republican conference lunch on Thursday were given an update on McConnell’s condition by his staff.

“He’s doing well, feels fine, but had a concussion.” Utah Sen. Mitt Romney said they were told,

Romney predicted that McConnell would stay in the hospital over the weekend and return to the Senate next week. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said he had spoken with McConnell’s staff “to extend my prayers and well wishes.”

It is past time for age limits be placed on how long a person can serve in both houses and as President and Vice President. Our government looks like a nursing home.

I totally agree with you, we need term limits as well as limiting how old our government officials can serve as it is glaringly apparent they will never police themselves!

Well, it depends. Their health history affects a lot, including mentation and decision making, plus mobility. We have some, such as a relatively young Rep from PA, Fetterman, who has a terrible health history and is showing no improvement in his aphasia/ability to speak and his ability to understand others speech after strokes. He also is less mobile than most at his age. He has a history of strokes and an ongoing risk of more, plus severe depression, high blood pressure, and who knows what else. He should have stayed at home to try and work at improving function with rehab.

Senator Grassley is in his 80s and remains sharp as a tack and energetic. Compared with Senator Fienstein, she is forgetful, confused, much lower function level. There are some with histories of drinking, and it hasn’t helped their function and long term cognitive status. All these cases have very different levels of energy and function.

Consider President Biden and his cognitive status, mobility, comprehension, energy. It is scary to have him in his position, “running ” America.

Comparing status of President Trump, in later 70s. He has a great health history and has never used drugs or alcohol or smoked. Zero use of those things helps, plus good family genetics and longevity and good, alert mentation history. The man needs almost no sleep (which is actually seen in many higher intellects in history) and his Administration sraff ALL said he could work them under the table any day, people that were even 40 some years younger. He’d be discussing things or having mtgs at 12 or 1 a.m., then would be up at 4 a.m. to see if they’d completed their assignment. Doing up to 4 daily rallys all around the US during campaigning, giving 90 to 120 min speeches with no prompter. Flying to various countries all over for lengthy negotiations and speeches, all with a great memory and no confusion,, with terrific name and face recognition everywhere. He also remembers past data and events abd conversations to easily tie them in with current events and actions. That really helps in negotiating and multi-tasking.

So age really is just a number that can’t be relied on. Comparing the Trump level of energy and mental clarity with some 30 year old Congressional people…no comparison. He has great genetics and is healthy and has no vices of drugs, alcohol, smoking. Makes a huge difference. His staff longed for a rest after a day along side him, but he kept going.
