WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that Democrats would pursue the impeachment case against President Donald Trump.
  • The Democrats will try to push the 25th Amendment resolution filed by Maryland Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin.
  • On Wednesday, Trump encouraged his followers to march at the Capitol to stop Congress from confirming the victory of President-elect Joe Biden.

On late Sunday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., announces that congressional Democrats will move to vote for the impeachment against President Donald Trump for allegedly instigating crowd violence on Wednesday at the Capitol.

Pelosi said the ideal response for Democrats following the mob assault on U.S. Capitol is calling for Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and oust Trump from office. The scenario, though, would be highly unlikely considering the president has only less than two weeks left in the White House.

However, in her written notice to her Democrat party mates,  the Speaker swore to push for the removal process vote even with the lack of response from Pence, anticipating a new record: the second impeachment of a president under his term.

In her letter, Pelosi wrote that they should act fast when it comes to protecting the American Democracy and Constitution, adding that Trump’s attack against both is threatening.

The House Speaker, who was one of the focus on Wednesday’s violence by some pro-Trump protesters, also discussed the Democrats’ plan for the next few days.

This Monday, they will attempt to invoke the 25th Amendment resolution filed by Maryland Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin through unanimous consent. The strategy will surely be halted by the president’s traditionalist allies.

Pelosi added that if the Unanimous Consent maneuver fails, they will bring up the legislation on the Floor the next day, noting that they are urging Vice President Pence to reply within 24 hours.

The Democrat leader says the next step shall be taking the impeachment rule to the Floor. And while the House Speaker did not disclose the schedule of the impeachment vote, party allies said they were planning to have it in the middle of the week.

Rep. James Clyburn, D- S.C.,  the House Majority Whip, during a Sunday interview with CNN’s Jack Tapper, said that Democrats could charge Trump now but postpone its filing to the Senate, giving incoming President Joe Biden enough stretch to arrange his Cabinet and unveil his 100-day plan before an impeachment proceeding sets back Congress for an uncertain extent.

Pelosi’s response was following the unexpected week of a violent attack in the country’s capital, an extraordinary case in the history of the  U.S.

Trump, who delivered a speech at the White House on Wednesday, had urged thousands of his followers to storm the Capitol to halt Congress from confirming Biden the winner in the 2020 election. Several supporters obliged, marching toward the Capitol during Congress’s discussion on certifying state-approved votes.

Over 200 Democrats have already signed the resolution as co-cosponsors, and for it to pass,  at least 217 will be required. It’s still uncertain though if any Republican Lawmakers will back it up.
