WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Former President Donald Trump remarked on how ahead his approval ratings are compared to his fellow Republicans during a recent rally.
  • Trump said he was at 71%, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, whom he called “DeSanctimonious,” was at 10%.
  • Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo came to DeSantis’s defense and even tweeted his support for the governor’s reelection campaign.

Former President Donald Trump had a new nickname for potential 2024 rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis: “Ron DeSanctimonious.” Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made sure to come to the governor’s defense following his former boss’s remarks.

Trump mentioned the new nickname during a rally in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, on Saturday evening, ahead of Tuesday’s midterms.

He told the crowd, “We’re winning big in the Republican Party for the nomination like nobody’s ever seen before.”

Trump then listed several Republicans who could be a potential rival in 2024, as well as their approval ratings.

He declared, “There it is, Trump at 71%, Ron DeSanctimonious at 10%.”

Pompeo quickly came to DeSantis’s defense and put out a tweet showcasing his support for the Florida governor’s reelection campaign.

Pompeo wrote, “Not tired of winning. @GovRonDeSantis you’ve proven conservative policies work. Florida is better for it. Vote for @GovRonDeSantis.”

Sources believe that Trump could announce his presidential campaign as early as this month, perhaps after the midterms. Political analysts also believe that DeSantis could challenge him for the GOP nomination.

Media outlets have speculated on potentially increasing tensions between the two, but DeSantis called Trump a “friend” earlier this year.

Back in February, DeSantis told Fox News that Trump “wants to see Republicans doing well.” He also called out the media for “trying to act like he’s upset at me for doing well,” adding, “I think that’s total bunk. I think they’re just making it up.”

Pompeo is also a potential contender. In September, the former secretary of state and CIA director alluded to making plans for a presidential campaign.

He said that he will make a decision by spring of 2023, and that he wouldn’t be deterred if his former boss does decide to run in 2024. Still, he said that he will vote for Trump with “no hesitation” if he wins the GOP nomination.

Pompeo has recently maintained a balanced act when it came to his views on Trump, who remains to be the most popular and influential politician among Republican voters.

Pompeo called Jan. 6, 2021, “a tragically bad day” for the country. He added that he “was incredibly proud of” Congress and then-Vice President Mike Pence for “going and finishing America’s business that day.”

He also expressed his belief that “the riots that took place all across this country during the 2020 were bad for America too.”
