Ted Cruz slammed over attempt to repair public image after Cancun trip

After facing backlash for leaving Texas last week amid the strong winter storm, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX.) is again at the receiving end following his social media posting of his pictures while he loads bottled waters to some vehicles.

With a hashtag caption #TexasStrong, Cruz posted photos of him carrying packs of water in a few cars in an empty parking lot. The senator did not specify where the photos took place.

Cruz, who drew flak last week for traveling to Cancun beach in Mexico while his state got overwhelmed by the snow storms, got even more criticisms after posting the images as some people claimed that they looked ‘scripted.’

“I’m glad someone in Ted Cruz’s Senate office finally instructed him on how to fake compassion, humanity, and creating the illusion that he cares about the people he was elected to serve,” Twitter user and researcher Melissa Ryan wrote.

“First you abandon your constituents, now they are crisis photo opps to you? Do you have any shame at all @tedcruz?” wrote activist and journalist David Weissman.

Another Twitter user said that Cruz violated the CDC protocols for US travelers coming from Mexico.

Another user compared Cruz’s efforts with New York Rep. Alexnadria Ocasio-Cortez’ (D-N.Y.) relief actions, who raised over $4 million relief for Texas and came to volunteer in a Houston food bank over the weekend.

Cruz’s office has not yet responded to a request for comment about his uploaded photos.

Per the Associated Press, millions of Texans have suffered scarcity of potable water due to freezing temperatures and low water pressures which resulted in water pipe bursts and inconsumable water in several places.

Responding to criticisms on Thursday, Cruz said that he left for Cancun to accompany his wife and two daughters, saying that he wanted to be a “good dad,” but admitting that it was “a total mistake” to depart while millions of his constituents endured the winter storm that resulted in 47 deaths.
