WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!

  • A 3-year-old girl found a loaded gun in a Texas home and accidentally shot her 4-year-old sister, killing her.
  • The girls were left unsupervised in their bedroom while five adults, who were family members or friends, were in other parts of the apartment.
  • The Harris County District Attorney’s Office will decide whether any of the adults will face charges based on the police investigation.

A tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening in a Texas apartment where a 3-year-old girl accidentally shot and killed her 4-year-old sister with a loaded semi-automatic pistol. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported that the girls were left unsupervised in their bedroom while five adults, who were family members or family friends, were in other parts of the apartment.

It appears that one parent thought the other parent was watching the children when in fact the two toddlers were left alone. Family members heard a single gunshot and found the 4-year-old unresponsive.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene, and the police responded to a 911 call by the family.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez stated that “it just seems like another tragic story of… a child gaining access to a firearm and hurting someone else, and this time there was a fatal shot.”

He emphasized the importance of responsible gun ownership, securing weapons in a safe place, and doing more than just telling young kids not to touch them.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is still investigating the incident to determine whether any of the adults will face charges.

Gonzalez expressed his sympathy for the family, stating that “our hearts are broken” and that support personnel would be at the scene to assist officers and family members.

He also acknowledged that the community is impacted when a child loses their life in this way and that the shooting was another avoidable gun death.

Nothing to do with the gun! It is to do with responsible gun owners! You should never have a loaded gun in the house or near any children! EVER – On the other hand, had the needed the gun for protection, they would be able to access it – for protection. Was the safety also off? The poor child that did it will have scars the rest of their life. So sad. With no supervision, a knife, a dresser could have fallen over, they could have opened a window – too many dangers.

Its sad some one died and sad that that little girl will always relive that moment! Hope she gets help and counseling as she grows up! The idiot leaving the weapon out should recieve some sort of punishment!

So many times we see unfortunate things happen to children when parents are too pre-occupied with their own lives to offer any supervision. After the fact, it’s always “I thought my spouse was watching them”. Kids aren’t kids forever, but while they are, parents need to pull their heads out of their posteriors and get their priorities straight. If that means forgoing a certain degree of socializing, so be it. Of course, the other factor at play here is RESPONSIBLE gun ownership. It’s idiots like this that bring us ever closer to losing the right to gun ownership altogether. The parents in this case should not be treated as victims, but rather as the ones fully responsible for enabling this tragic act. If negligence is involved – as it very likely is here – then this shouldn’t be looked at as merely a tragic accident. There needs to be accountability and punishment.

It seems to be assumed, that the gun belonged to the parents, however, I see NO statement as to who it belonged to. It says they were in the children’s bedroom-highly unlikely that ANY parent would have knowingly left a loaded gun in their childlren’s room. MAYBE, you are blaming the wrong person? MAYBE, it belonged to one of the guests! We need to be sure we know ALL the facts, before we place blame! These parents are facing enough righ now, w/out possibly be blamed for something THEY didn’t-at least KNOWINGLY- do!

Tragic. Now how about non-stop bleeding heart stories of kids drowning in swimming pools? I’m betting that’s a lot more common than incidents like this.

We are both retired and there are no kids around or grand kids around in our house. So we may have loaded firearms on our person or in rooms where we are. How ever when someone comes over to visit be they adults or children all fire arms that are not being carried on our person are locked in a safe in a locked room, and all ammunition that is not in the weapons we are carrying are in another locked room. We live in an area that has many varmints including skunks, raccoons, badgers, coyotes, feral dogs, and opossums. Any of these animals can become dieseled, and dangerous which is why we carry a firearm in and around the house and out buildings. I’m a military vet and have handled and used firearms most of my life, and I taught my wife and children to be very careful and watchful around firearms. My son is retired military and he too is very careful around his firearms, our two adult girls both own firearms and they are also extremely careful with them. If you are going to own and carry firearms you have a duty and responsibility to treat them with the utmost respect and careful use at ALL times, no matter what. You wouldn’t leave a plugged in circular saw laying around where your kids could get a hold of it so why would you leave a firearm in such a manor?

Don’t blame the gun !!!!! There should be no doubt , that the parents should be severely charged and go to prison . It’s stories like this , about stupid , irresponsible parents that give guns a bad name !!! A precedence should have been set a long time ago ,,,,,, if a minor child gets access to a parents gun . the parents should be charged ,,,, if the child gets access and shoots someone , the parents should go to prison !!!!! PERIOD !!!
