President Donald Trump took action Saturday to increase leverage over Denmark in pursuit of purchasing Greenland, unveiling a fresh round of tariffs targeting eight European nations. The administration considers acquiring Greenland vital to maintaining America’s global security leadership.
Starting February 1, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland will face a 10% tariff on all goods exported to the United States. That tariff will jump to 25% by June 1 if talks on selling Greenland remain unresolved.

President Trump accused the United States of subsidizing European nations by allowing tariff-free trade for years. He insisted the purchase of Greenland is justified to keep foreign adversaries at bay.

“The United States has been trying to do this transaction for over 150 years. Many Presidents have tried, and for good reason, but Denmark has always refused. … The United States of America is immediately open to negotiation with Denmark and/or any of these Countries that have put so much at risk, despite all that we have done for them, including maximum protection, over so many decades.”
