Two Major States Take Opposite Stands On Immigration as Border Tensions Rise
Clear Facts
- Texas Governor Greg Abbott is intensifying efforts at the state’s border with Mexico in anticipation of a significant migration surge.
- Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is committed to protecting undocumented immigrants in his state, reinforcing Illinois’ sanctuary status.
- There are conflicting reports on the movement of migrants, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection not yet observing mass migration at the U.S. border.
As Texas gears up for a potential influx of migrants, Governor Greg Abbott is doubling down on his commitment to border security. Abbott has pledged to utilize “every tool and strategy available” under Operation Lone Star to safeguard both Texas and the nation.
This initiative has already seen nearly 120,000 migrants transported to sanctuary cities across the United States since April 2022.
Lieutenant Chris Olivares of the Texas Department of Public Safety highlighted the ongoing Mass Migration Response Exercises being conducted by troopers and National Guard soldiers along the border.
Despite these preparations, sources from U.S. Customs and Border Protection have indicated that there is currently no evidence of a mass migration heading toward the U.S. border.
A source noted that Mexico’s refusal to allow migrants to use trains for large-scale movement has reduced the numbers being transported by bus to “hundreds, not the thousands” previously seen.
In stark contrast, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has reaffirmed his state’s sanctuary status, stating, “I am going to do everything that I can to protect our undocumented immigrants. They are residents of our state.”
Pritzker expressed skepticism about the constitutionality of former President Trump’s mass deportation plans, though he did not elaborate on his reasoning.
“We have attorneys general that are working on these kinds of issues within the courts,” he added.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healy has also committed to protecting illegal immigrants, asserting that she would not assist the Trump administration with any mass deportation efforts.
However, Pritzker did indicate a willingness to cooperate with the Trump administration in deporting individuals “who’s been convicted of a violent crime.”
