Utah Suspect Named in College Tragedy Probe
Clear Facts
- Tyler Robinson, 22, has been identified as the suspect in the killing of Charlie Kirk on a Utah college campus.
- Robinson was arrested after a family member reported his confession or implication in the incident.
- Authorities recovered a Mauser Model 98 .30-06 caliber bolt action rifle linked to the case.
Utah officials confirmed the suspect in the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Washington County.
“We got him on the evening of Sept. 11,” Utah Gov. Spencer Cox announced in a Friday morning news briefing.
Robinson’s arrest followed a tip from a family member who contacted law enforcement with information that he had confessed or implied involvement in the incident.
“A family member of Tyler Robinson reached out to a family friend who contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office with information that Robinson had confessed to them or implied that he had committed the incident.”
Robinson’s background includes attending Pine View Middle School and Pine View High School, confirmed by the Washington County School District.
By 2021, he was a student at Utah State University for one semester as a pre-engineering major.
In a statement, Utah State University confirmed: “Utah State University confirms that Tyler Robinson, the suspect arrested in the killing of Charlie Kirk, briefly attended Utah State University for one semester in 2021.”
“We can also confirm that he was a pre-engineering major and took classes consistent with that major for his one semester.”
Robinson received the Resident Presidential Scholarship, awarded to top academic performers, and had no disciplinary record at the school.
At the time of arrest, he was enrolled in an electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College and had also participated in concurrent enrollment with Utah Tech University during high school.
Gov. Cox outlined the investigation timeline that included cooperation with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, Utah Valley University investigators, and the FBI.
Authorities linked Robinson to the crime after video surveillance showed him arriving at Utah Valley University in a gray Dodge Challenger around 8:29 a.m. on Sept. 10, shortly before the shooting occurred.
A family member confirmed to officials that Robinson owned a vehicle matching this description.
“He is observed on video in a plain maroon T-shirt, light colored shorts, a black hat with a white logo and light colored shoes,” Cox said.
Investigators learned Robinson had become increasingly political, according to interviews with family members and roommates.
“In that conversation, Robinson mentioned Charlie Kirk was coming to UVU. They talked about why they didn’t like him and the viewpoints that he had.”
Authorities recovered a Mauser Model 98 .30-06 caliber bolt action rifle wrapped in a dark-colored towel north of UVU’s Campus Drive Road.
“The rifle was determined to be a Mauser Model 98 .30-06 caliber bolt action rifle,” Cox said. “The rifle had a scope mounted on top of it. Investigators noted inscriptions that had been engraved on casings found with the rifle.”
The investigation continues, with Gov. Cox crediting law enforcement and the Robinson family for their actions.
