WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Governor Andrew Cuomo was shocked to announce on Wednesday that over 66% of new hospitalized COVID-19 patients statewide were people who really stayed at home during the lockdown.
  • The survey also showed that a total of 46% of new cases were unemployed and 37% were retired.
  • New York is currently working with former Mayor Michael Bloomberg on tracing the cases and virus tracking via a tech-heavy approach.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Wednesday that more than majority of new COVID-19 patients in state’s hospitals were people who followed ‘stay-at-home’ orders.

Cuomo said it was “shocking” that people who are either retired, or unemployed, and not commuting to work regularly comprised 66% of the recent hospitalized cases of COVID-19.

“This is a surprise: Overwhelmingly, the people were at home,” Cuomo said during a briefing on Long Island. “We thought maybe they were taking public transportation, and we’ve taken special precautions on public transportation, but actually no, because these people were literally at home.”

The data came from a preliminary survey of 1,269 respondents from 113 hospitals. The survey which ran for over three days was conducted to gather information on how COVID-19 spreads.

The data showed that 18% of new cases came from nursing homes, 4% from assisted-living facilities, 2% from congregate-care facilities, 2% were homeless, less than 1% from prisons and 8% were marked as ‘others.’

It was also found out that 73% of hospitalized individuals were aged 51 and above. A total of 46% of new cases were unemployed and 37% were retired.

While the virus may have slowed down, the governor cautioned against acting too quickly.

“It reinforces what we’ve been saying, which is, much of this comes down to what you can do to protect yourself… Everything is closed down, government has done everything it could, society has done everything it could, now it’s up to you,” Cuomo noted.

The state currently works with former Mayor Michael Bloomberg on tracing the cases and virus tracking via a tech-heavy approach. It is crucial for the state to know more about the COVID-19 situation in New York as it’s planning to restart some parts of the economy.

The state’s hospitalization rate is declining. A day earlier, there were 232 deaths and around 600 new cases of COVID-19 hospitalized patients.
