WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Dr. Anthony Fauci is concerned that the number of new coronavirus cases could reach up to 100,000 if the surge does not let up.
  • Fauci says it is too early to tell if the lifting of restrictions and reopening of businesses is the cause for the surge.
  • The bulk of the new cases are young ones who went to the beaches and bars during Memorial Day weekend or attended protest mass actions after George Floyd’s murder.

If the surge in coronavirus cases continues, the number of cases per day of 40,000 can reach up to 100,000 according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

“I am very concerned,” Dr. Fauci said at a Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee hearing.

Dr. Fauci said that it is too early to say if the spike could be attributed to the reopening of economies and the lifting of travel restrictions.

A spike in the number of new cases reached thousands in Texas and Florida after people went out to beaches and bars for the Memorial Day weekend. Another reason is the mass protests and riots against George Floyd’s murder in Arizona and other states.

The public health director of Cleveland, Ohio credited the current spike in the city to the May 30 Black Lives Matter protest when it lifted its daytime travel restrictions.

Young people comprise the large bulk of new cases. They are the ones who are capable of bouncing back from the disease.  What officials fear is the possible transmission of the disease to the elderly or vulnerable.

The surge in number also led to some states like Arizona, California, Florida and Texas, to pause or backtrack their plans to reopen their economies.

Health experts have been warning about this possibility of a second wave or surge if restrictions would be lifted.  But these warnings were faced with strong opposition as they questioned the efficacy of the lockdown restrictions and instead, focused on the economic and social damage from the lockdowns.
