WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • New York governor Andrew Cuomo is hopeful that some essential businesses will open again after May 15.
  • Cuomo previously signed an executive order placing almost the whole state in lockdown, including non-essential businesses, and the restriction will expire in the second week of May.
  • As of this writing, there are a total of 12,839 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 in New York.

On Sunday, New York state Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that some businesses, such as construction firms and manufacturing companies outside New York City (NYC), might be safe to reopen after May 15.

Currently, New York City is considered the coronavirus pandemic epicenter of the state, with almost half of the total number of cases.

On May 15, the lockdown order is scheduled to end, and part one is to resume the operation of businesses. The second phase, meanwhile, involves the recommencement of other firms with considerations on the risk, and how its products or services are essential to the public.

During the recent coronavirus press briefing, Cuomo said he’s not okay with getting too enthusiastic yet as a gradual and wider reopening of the state’s southern side, including Nassau and Suffolk counties and New York City will be a challenge and that close coordination with Connecticut and New Jersey officials are required.

Cuomo added that the people in New York City would not prefer sitting at homes over the summer, noting that option is not likely realistic.

Governor Cuomo reported that, as of Sunday, there are around 367 new COVID-19 related deaths, and since March 31, this was the lowermost number listed in the state.

He also announced that on Saturday, no less than 1,087 new virus patients in the state were confined at the hospitals. This total was a jump of 685 cases from the preceding day.

As of Sunday, there are a total of 12,839 individuals hospitalized in New York because of coronavirus.

While Cuomo said that the statistics are still alarming, he said that the new numbers have improved from the time the outbreak has started. He also emphasized that there is a decrease in the number of COVID-19 fatalities, and although deaths are still terrible, the trend shows a positive direction.
