Guilty Verdict Launches Calls for Senator Menendez’s Resignation Amidst Damning Bribery Charges
Clear Facts
- Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has requested Bob Menendez to resign from his Senate seat after a guilty verdict on 16 charges, including bribery and conspiracy to obstruct justice.
- Multiple high-ranking Democrats, such as Sen. Cory Booker and Rep. Jeff Jackson, have urged Menendez’s resignation due to the irrefutable evidence against him.
- Menendez could receive a sentence of up to 20 years; if he does not concede voluntarily, a two-third majority vote in the Senate could lead to his expulsion.
In a shocking development, Senator Bob Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, was convicted on all 16 counts of a federal bribery case. The charges, which resulted in a swift and unanimous verdict, included allegations of bribery, acting as a foreign agent, extortion, wire fraud, and conspiracy to obstruct justice.
The prosecution claimed that Menendez leveraged his influential Senate position to procure favors for Egypt and other clients. The verdict has created ripples across the political landscape and led to immediate calls from fellow Democrats for Menendez to leave his Senate seat.
“In the wake of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now act in the best interests of his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign,” announced Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York in a social media post shortly after the conviction was publicized.
Other Democratic leaders supported Schumer’s sentiment. “I urged Sen. Menendez to resign when a plethora of damaging evidence against him was revealed. Now that he’s been convicted on all counts, there’s undoubtedly no excuse: He must resign or be expelled,” Rep. Jeff Jackson of North Carolina shared his thoughts.
Sen. Cory Booker, also a Democrat from New Jersey, released a heartfelt statement, discussing the impact of Menendez’s actions on their mutual constituents. “This is a bleak, agonizing day for the people of New Jersey. Serving people in Congress requires the public’s trust. When any elected official shatters that trust, it is a breach of the oath we take to serve the people who’ve elected us,” elaborated Booker.
“I advocate for Senator Menendez to resign. I initially did so last fall due to the severity of the allegations against him and how they undermined the public’s trust,” Booker continued. “Now, with this conviction, the need for Senator Menendez to step down and for the governor to appoint a replacement is even more critical.”
New Jersey’s Governor, Phil Murphy, adopted a decisive stance, stating that if Menendez did not willingly resign, the Senate should use its authority to expel him. Amidst the requests for resignation, other Democrats had earlier expressed their dissatisfaction with Menendez following his indictment, among them, Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania who was exceptionally critical of his colleague.
U. S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, spoke about the seriousness of the case: “This wasn’t politics as usual; this was politics for profit.”
The charges against Menendez carry a maximum term of 20 years. If he decides to hold onto his Senate seat, he could face expulsion by a two-thirds vote in the Senate.

I bet he wishes he was a Republican. Then all his colleagues would be calling the trial a sham and vote to keep him in the Senate

But he’s a democrat. A fitting party for a lying criminal using his position for illegal personal gain (in dictionary under “Biden”)

Menendez should have been convicted and serving time from his previous bribery charges. This has been long overdue and now he just might serve time behind bars.
I couldn’t be happier!

Scum bag just like most of democrats! No loyalty to country and criminals is their first wish.
