Mitt Romney: “Biden needs to ditch his woke advisers”

Sen. Mitt Romney criticized President Joe Biden’s handling of inflation on Wednesday in a Wall Street Journal op-ed. The Utah Republican blamed the administration’s handling of the economy as Americans struggle with the highest inflation in 40 years.

“President Biden needs to ditch his woke advisers and surround himself with people who want to get the economy working again,” Romney wrote in the critical op-ed.

The senator wrote that the Biden administration’s stimulus law is to blame for stoking inflation. The Covid-19 stimulus law issued relief checks for Americans. No Republican voted for the bill, which passed the House and the Senate in March last year.

The former GOP presidential nominee also cited oil and gas production limits and a pro-union stance for triggering inflation. In his op-ed, he leans on establishing a bipartisan commission in Congress to “rescue our federal entitlement programs from impending collapse.”

Romney said last month that he’d support cutting retirement benefits for younger Americans as a way to keep the national debt in check.

Romney is the first senator in American history to defy his own party by voting to convict a president facing impeachment. He was the only Republican to vote to convict former President Donald Trump during his first impeachment. Romney is also one of seven GOP senators to vote to convict Trump for inciting the January 6 Capitol riot. 

Only three GOP senators voted to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. Romney was one of them. He’s also one of 17 Republicans who voted for Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure plan, and one of six Republicans who voted for a dedicated commission to investigate the January 6 insurrection. 

Like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Romney pushes for Biden to be more moderate on economic policy.

“In any crisis situation, the first three rules are focus, focus and focus,” Romney wrote. “President Biden’s domestic focus must be on inflation.”

Romney’s op-ed only shows how Republicans want to use historic inflation to attack Democrats ahead of the midterm elections in November.
