WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Former President Barack Obama posted his support on Twitter Sunday, backing six candidates vying for congressional seats in New York.
  • Obama bypassed rookie lawmaker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a self-proclaimed socialist who has become a well-known Democrat candidate.
  • As election day comes, Obama is anticipated to endorse more New Yorker candidates.

On Monday, Former President Barack Obama endorsed six New Yorkers vying for legislative seats in the House except for neophyte representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

A self-proclaimed socialist with the initials AOC, Ocasio-Cortez is becoming a powerful Democrat figure for this year’s election. She aided in leading the party towards leftist ideas on education and health care issues.

Obama backed Rep. Antonio Delgado (Hudson Valley) and Rep. Max Rose (Staten Island and southern Brooklyn), both incumbent New York legislators.

Rose went into a verbal tussle with AOC in an attempt to limit people who enter the military through online recruitment.

“This is incredibly insulting as it perpetuates the limousine liberal trope that soldiers are idiots who only get duped into enlisting,” Rose told The Post. The proposed measure lost significantly by a wide margin.

The former president also backed Jackie Gordon who’s running to replace outgoing Rep. Peter King in Long Island, and Dana Balter, who’s vying as Syracuse representative.

Obama also endorsed former school principal Jamaal Bowman, who was victorious over Rep. Eliot Engel in the Bronx and Westchester County and attorney Mondaire Jones, who is running to replace retiring lawmaker Nita Lowney in New York City’s northern district.

Obama’s 2020 initial endorsements follow the Democratic primaries so it won’t affect the final Democrat candidates in the November election but would still impact voters and donors.

Obama posted his endorsed Democrat New Yorkers candidates on Twitter. As election day comes, he is anticipated to express support for more New Yorker candidates.
