Authorities in Pima County, Arizona, are facing scrutiny after Sheriff Chris Nanos declined to provide critical evidence in a suspected abduction to the FBI.
Nanos is not allowing the FBI access to a glove and DNA evidence, sending the items to a Florida-based contractor for analysis instead of the FBI’s Virginia lab.
The move has reportedly created concern among law enforcement that the approach may slow the investigation’s progress.
According to an anonymous source familiar with the case, “It’s clear the fastest path to answers is leveraging federal resources and technology. Anything less only prolongs the Guthrie family’s grief and the community’s wait for justice.”
Sheriff Nanos, a Democrat first elected in 2020 and narrowly re-elected in 2024, leads Arizona’s second most populous county.
Nancy Guthrie is the mother of “Today” host Savannah Guthrie, who remains hopeful for her mother’s return.
“We believe that somehow, some way, she is feeling these prayers and that God is lifting her even in this moment and in this darkest place. We believe our mom is still out there,” Savannah Guthrie stated in a video message.
She added, “Law enforcement is working tirelessly around the clock, trying to bring her home, trying to find her. She was taken, and we don’t know where, and we need your help.”
