Former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines was physically assaulted and barricaded in a room at San Francisco State University after giving a speech about saving women’s sports at a Turning Point USA and Leadership Institute event on campus.

Gaines, who became a national figure after objecting to trans swimmer Lia Thomas participating in women’s sports, was hit multiple times by a man in a dress, according to her husband Louis Barker. Gaines was under police protection at the time of the assault, but was still hit by the man. Pro-trans protesters had become increasingly loud outside the room during her speech, as seen in footage shared on social media.

During her speech, Gaines shared her personal story of competing against a biological male athlete at the Women’s NCAA Swimming Championships last year. Her goal in speaking at universities has been to educate her peers about the impact of the growing number of biological males in women’s sports on Title IX.

While Gaines encourages diverse viewpoints and debate on the issue, she was violently accosted, shouted at, physically assaulted, and barricaded in a room by protestors at San Francisco State University.

The counter-protest to Gaines’ speech was reportedly organized by SFSU’s Queer and Trans Resource Center, according to a spokesperson for Turning Point USA. Protesters rushed into the room when the event was over, and TPUSA staff were held up and escorted out of the venue amid the chaos.

While Gaines was being moved to a safer location, protesters were captured on video chanting various phrases, such as “go the f–k home” and “trans women are women,” while placing transgender flags on the school’s walls. The San Francisco Police Department and SFSU did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the situation.

In conclusion, Gaines’ speech about saving women’s sports at San Francisco State University was met with violence and protests from pro-trans activists. While Gaines was hit by a man in a dress and barricaded in a room under police protection, TPUSA staff were also held up and escorted out of the venue.

The counter-protest was reportedly organized by SFSU’s Queer and Trans Resource Center.
