Skippy recalls peanut butter due to possible metal fragments inside

  • Skippy Foods is recalling 81 tons of peanut butter over concerns about the possibility of small pieces of stainless steel contaminating the jars.
  • In a press release Thursday, the food company said the possible metal fragments come from a piece of manufacturing equipment.
  • The different varieties of Skippy peanut butter products involved all have “best-if-used-by” dates in May of 2023.

Skippy Foods is recalling almost 81 tons or 161,692 pounds of Skippy peanut butter products. According to Hormel Foods, owner of Skippy, the being recalled jars may contain small fragments of stainless steel from a piece of manufacturing equipment.

In the notice posted Wednesday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the recall involves 9,353 cases of three types of peanut butter. The issue has been detected by internal systems at the facility where the peanut butter was produced.

The three varieties being recalled were Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread, Skippy Reduced Fat Chunky Peanut Butter Spread and Skippy Creamy Peanut Butter Blended With Plant Protein. All products have “best-if-used-by” dates of May 2023.

The product affected by the recall was being sold in Walmart and other stores in 18 states: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.

To check if the Skippy product purchased is under recall, look for the UPC code on the side of the jar where the store scans the product. Check for one of the four series of numbers: 37600-10520, 37600-10667, 37600-10499 or 37600-88095. 

  • Skippy Reduced Fat Chunky Peanut Butter, 16.3-ounce, with best-by dates of May 6, and May 7, 2023
  • Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter, 40-ounce, with best-by dates of May 4 and May 5, 2023
  • Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter – Club, 2/40-ounce, with best-by date of May 5, 2023
  • Skippy Creamy Peanut Butter with Plant Protein, 14-ounce, best-by May 10, 2023

If you purchased any of the recalled jars with best-by dates of May 6, and May 7, 2023, those can be returned to the store where they were bought. For an exchange request, you may call Skippy at 1-866-475-4779, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Central Time.

Skippy produces over 90 million jars of peanut butter every year. Minnesota-based Hormel also produces Jennie-O turkey and Spam.

    Good that they’re responsibly recalling possible machine malfunction contaminant, but I noticed: “Creamy Peanut Butter with Plant Protein” I didn’t know peanuts were animal or seafood proteins, I always thought peanuts WERE plants. Maybe the soy protein is “more concentrated New & Improved” or lower fat or something, but I would consider “Soy” as a pejorative, especially in a protein-source food.
