WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Trump posted on Twitter his criticism over Powell’s statement that he will not vote the president again in this year’s election.
  • Powell said his choice would be former vice president Joe Biden, explaining that Trump mishandled the nationwide unrest that erupted following George Floyd’s murder under the hands of police officers.
  • The president blamed Powell for the destructive mess brought about by the Middle East wars.

Following the comment of retired Gen. Colin Powell that his vote will go to former vice president Joe Biden, President Trump immediately retorted at the former secretary of State’s choice.

On Sunday, Trump wrote on Twitter that the man liable for getting the U.S. into the terrible war in the Middle East is to vote for Biden, who called the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee a boring person.

Trump added that it was Powell who reported before that Iraq had armaments of mass destruction, and the U.S went to war, finding out later that the country is not hiding anything.

The president’s remarks came after CNN’s “State of the Union” interview with Powell, who said he would be supporting Biden, noting he’s undoubtedly not voting Trump this year as he did in the year 2016.

“I certainly cannot in any way support President Trump this year,” he said.

Powell worked as secretary of State under the administration of former President George W. Bush and as the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s chairman with both ex-Presidents Clinton and George H.W. Bush.

The retired general also echoed the criticism of other high-ranking current and former military officers over Trump’s treatment of the countrywide demonstrations against police violence sparked by the murder of George Floyd.

Powell added that the Constitution must be followed, but the president has eschewed away from it.

On Wednesday, former Trump Defense Secretary James Mattis said on a statement that the president was the only leader he saw that was attempting to divide Americans. Powell’s Trump criticism followed the issuance of Mattis’ statement.

Some Republican legislators also expressed their approval with Mattis, such as Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), with the lady senator saying she was having second thoughts if she would vote Trump this year.

As a response, Trump attacked Murkowski for her comment, swearing to promote against her for her reelection bid in 2022, saying he would endorse any candidate that’ll be the senator’s opponent.
