  • The United States conducted airstrikes against ISIS targets in Syria after an attack killed two American soldiers last weekend.
  • Secretary of War Pete Hegseth described the action as vengeance, not a new war, and emphasized direct retaliation against those targeting Americans.
  • President Trump and Hegseth honored the fallen troops in a ceremony at Dover Air Force Base.

Two American soldiers, 29-year-old Nate Howard and 25-year-old Edgar Torres of the Iowa National Guard, and interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat, were killed in an ISIS attack last Saturday in Palmyra, Syria.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth confirmed the U.S. response Thursday, stating forces had launched Operation Hawkeye Strike targeting ISIS fighters, infrastructure, and weapons sites in central Syria after the deadly assault.

“Earlier today, U.S. forces commenced OPERATION HAWKEYE STRIKE in Syria to eliminate ISIS fighters, infrastructure, and weapons sites in direct response to the attack on U.S. forces that occurred on December 13th in Palmyra, Syria,” Hegseth posted on X.

“This is not the beginning of a war — it is a declaration of vengeance. The United States of America, under President Trump’s leadership, will never hesitate and never relent to defend our people.”

Hegseth added, “As we said directly following the savage attack, if you target Americans — anywhere in the world — you will spend the rest of your brief, anxious life knowing the United States will hunt you, find you, and ruthlessly kill you.”

“Today, we hunted and we killed our enemies. Lots of them. And we will continue.”

A U.S. official reported that the strikes impacted dozens of ISIS sites across central Syria, calling the operation a “massive attack.”

Following last weekend’s attack, President Trump pledged retaliation and reaffirmed America’s commitment to defending its people.

“I can tell you in Syria there will be a lot of damage done to the people that did it, that they got the person, the individual person, but there’ll be big damage done,” Trump said on Sunday.

The President and Secretary Hegseth participated in the dignified transfer of the fallen soldiers’ remains at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, paying respects to their sacrifice.
